Ford to Create or Retain 800 Local Jobs at Livonia Transmission Plant

Those shopping for new Ford vehicles in Redford are in a unique position. We are so close to Ford Motor Company's Dearborn headquarters, many of our vehicles don't have to travel far to make it to the dealership lot! Many of our customers have worked for Ford, or know someone who works for Ford.

Some good news came out last week for local job-seekers: Ford is investing $350 million in the Livonia Transmission Plant.

This investment will upgrade the plant to manufacture a new, more efficient transmission, and will create (or protect) 800 hourly jobs.

"Today’s announcement of investment at the Livonia Transmission Plant is further evidence of the benefits of collective bargaining and the ongoing commitment of UAW-Ford to lead the way in creating and maintaining automotive manufacturing jobs in America," said Jimmy Settles, UAW vice president. "The addition of these 800 jobs will add job security for the plant’s hardworking men and women, and support for the surrounding community."

Don't expect to see job listings pop up right away, however. Ford says it plans to begin hiring for new jobs late this year, but most positions will be added in 2018 and 2019.

Ford Motor Company got its start in Michigan over a century ago, and rose to prominence not just for introducing assembly line manufacturing, but for treating workers fairly in a time when there were few protections for laborers. Today, Ford still works closely with the United Automobile Workers labor union, and often finds itself on lists of best companies to work for.
