Proud Lake State Recreation Area One of the largest state recreation areas around at close to 5,000 acres, Proud Lake SRA sits on the beautiful Huron River in Oakland County, close to the town of Wixom, MI. While the recreation opportunities here are certainly plentiful, nothing beats hiking the 20 miles of trails that wind through an incredibly diverse range of habitats, offering chances to spot some incredible wildlife. Dequindre Cut Greenway Nicknamed the "Cut," this paved path cuts through downtown Detroit and has separate lanes for bikers and pedestrians. It is well maintained and is a great place to check out Detroit's street art as well. There are three entrances to the path, free parking near the southern end, and it is just under 2 miles in length. 2. Macomb Orchard Trail The Macomb Orchard Trail stretches from Rochester to Richmond and passes plenty of orchards on the way. It follows the Michigan airline railroad which was designed to take passengers across the state. A smoothly paved surface and no pedestrians make this 23.5-mile ride feel like a breeze. 3. Hines Park Trail and Rogue River Gateway Greenway This is actually two trails, the 2 mile Hines Park and the 17.5 mile Rogue River Gateway, that function together as a 19.5-mile trail. Intertwining with the aforementioned Rogue River helps make the trail extraordinarily scenic. The trail also has plenty of restrooms, playgrounds, and parking making it a great activity for the whole family. 4. Clinton River Park Trail Running east of the Clinton River, this trail has a main paved pathway through wooded areas and also a mountain biking trail that runs parallel to it. At the northern end of the path there is River Bends Park and at the southern end there is Dodge Park. This 4.5-mile trail is free of debris and if you are lucky you may even run into some friendly wildlife to take a picture with. 5. Detroit RiverWalk Considered the iconic trail in the Detroit area, the RiverWalk offers a great view of the Detroit River and the city's skyline. Connected to the trail is the massive Milliken State Park which also has plenty to enjoy for all ages. It is only 3.5 miles long but is still considered an essential trail by just about everyone. 6. Stony Creek Metropark Trail Kept in top shape by the Michigan Mountain Bike Association, Stony Creek is a trail that is sure to be worth your time. Deluca's Restaurant Deluca's on Warren Road in Westland, Michigan, has been serving Italian American dishes for over 56 years. There is something for everyone at Deluca's with meat entrees such as breaded veal parmigiana. This is a breaded veal cutlet topped with mozzarella cheese, Parmesan, and a rich tomato sauce. There are lots of pasta options too. Antonio's Piccolo Ristorante Make sure to stop by Antonio's Piccolo Ristorante for traditional Italian dishes made the old fashioned way. Antonio's signature dishes include the gnocchi Rita served with Mama Rita's pancetta and mushroom sauce and the spaghetti carbonara Alla Bocelli. The chicken Antonio is a pan-seared chicken breast smothered in white sauce that comes topped with provolone cheese. You can also get classic linguine with clams with either a red or white sauce, and the linguine Delmar with a combination of fresh shrimp, whitefish, and scallops that are all sauteed in a zesty tomato sauce. Read on to learn about our three favorite bookstores. more Pages Susan Murphy opened Pages Bookshop with a mission of helping children learn to read and love books. With its cozy nooks and seating, Pages is a great place to curl up and get lost in a good book. Literary fiction, nonfiction, and children's literature are among the treasures you will find on the shelves. In addition to books, Pages is also home to intimate readings by authors and book club discussions. Be sure to keep an eye out for the bookstore's cat, Pip, who is a favorite among the regulars. Source Booksellers Located in the heart of the Midtown district, Source Booksellers is a great stop for lovers of nonfiction. Owner Janet Webster Jones, a retired Detroit Public Schools teacher, opened the bookstore over 20 years ago, and still hand-selects all of the books and products on Source's shelves. Source only sells nonfiction books, with an emphasis on history, culture, health, well-being, metaphysics, spirituality, and books about or written by women. The shop also hosts many events, such as poetry readings, round-table discussions with local and nationally-known authors, and book clubs. In addition to books, Source Booksellers also sells Fair Trade chocolates, maps, oils, incense, Shea butter products, and snacks. You can find Source Booksellers at 4240 Cass Ave., in Suite 105. The store is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. Online ordering and curbside pickup are available. John King Used and Rare Books Since opening its doors in 1965, John King has become known for its vast collection of used and rare books as well as hard-to-find ephemera. The store has over 1 million books in stock in a wide variety of subject areas. The original store, at 901 W. Lafayette Blvd., in downtown Detroit, features four jam-packed stories of books. A second, smaller store (called John King North) is at 22524 Woodward Ave., in the suburb of Ferndale. The staff at John King prides themselves on their service. They can help find anything you desire in the store or order it for delivery. If you are looking for something extra-special, check out the rare book room.  This space is home to more than 25,000 books, bindings, memorabilia, autographed items, first edition printings, lithographs, watercolors, and more.
