An Abundance of Price Points and Trim Levels
If you’re worried about finding a Ford Explorer that suits your needs and fits your budget, don’t be. Ford rings in 2021 with nine trim levels for its most popular SUV. They all come with an impressive list of standard features and more amenities are added as you work your way up the ladder. To give you an idea of the price range, the entry-level base trim starts at $33,920 and the top Platinum Hybrid trim sells for $54,330.
Off-Road Capability
Ford’s Terrain Management System is standard across all trim levels of the 2021 Explorer. It gives the driver plenty of options to choose the optimal drive setting based on road conditions. The different drive modes can adjust to off-roading and trails, snow or sand, and when towing heavy loads. The system also does an excellent job of managing downhill speeds, especially on steep roads, thanks to the Hill Descent control feature.
Engine Options
Opening up the lineup of powertrain options is a four-cylinder turbocharged 2.3-liter that pumps out 300 horsepower. Moving up to the Platinum model and the engine turns into a 3.0-liter V6 that’s also turbocharged and delivers 365 horses. The sportier Explorer ST also carries the same engine under the hood but with an even 400 ponies. The hybrid engine option is a 3.3-liter V6 that pairs with an electric motor and together generate 318 horsepower.
Exterior Design Upgrades
The Explorer has come a long way since its early days and has established itself as one of the best-designed SUVs on the market today. But you can jazz things up a little more if you opt for the Sport Appearance package that’s available on the XLT Trim. It features Carbonized Gray painted 20-inch wheels and a matching mesh grille and other accents. The lower-body cladding is also uniquely colored as are the dual exhaust outlets.

Standard across all trim levels of the 2021 Explorer is an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system that features Apple and Android smartphone integration. It’s responsive and very easy to use, and buyers have the option to upgrade to a 10.1-inch screen if they go for the Platinum or ST trims. Voice navigation is also standard along with an entertainment system for the kids in the far back. Every model above the base model comes standard with a 12-speaker B&O stereo system.
