The small township suburb of Redford, MI might not seem like the most obvious place to head to when planning a camping trip. However, it is actually within driving distance of some incredible places to camp, with scenic beaches, mountains, and forests all just a short trip away. Family around campfire

1. Sterling State Park

Located just under an hour’s drive from Redford, on the beautiful shores of Lake Erie, Sterling State Park has a great variety of recreational activities to enjoy, and, as the only Michigan park on Lake Erie, it is very popular with visitors from the greater Detroit Metro Area.

It is worth reserving campgrounds in advance to be sure of getting a spot. Visitors can swim, fish, or boat on the lake, while on land, there are miles of multi-use trails to explore that take in the park’s beautiful woodland. The 256 modern campsites all include electricity, water, and access to showers and toilets.

2. Island Lake Recreation Area

A 4,000-acre park located in the county of Livingston, to the west of the metro area, Island Lake Recreation is a great kayaking destination, with lots of rivers, creeks, and lakes to explore. The park is also famous for its hot air balloons; taking off every morning, booking a ride on one can be an exhilarating experience that allows you to view the beautiful countryside from above.

Many of the campgrounds are canoe campgrounds that can only be accessed from the water, while the rest offer peaceful stopping points for RVs and tents, with plenty of amenities.

3. Algonac State Park

Close to the Canadian border, and to the north of the Detroit Metro Area, this state park offers some excellent opportunities for outdoor fun for all the family. Sportfishing on Lake St. Clair is especially popular, especially in the spring and fall, but the campground is open all year round.

The campgrounds here are quite exposed as they are located in a large field, but they do offer all the facilities you could need, including a shower block with flushing toilets, hot showers, and a dump station that all campers can use.

4. Proud Lake State Recreation Area

One of the largest state recreation areas around at close to 5,000 acres, Proud Lake SRA sits on the beautiful Huron River in Oakland County, close to the town of Wixom, MI. While the recreation opportunities here are certainly plentiful, nothing beats hiking the 20 miles of trails that wind through an incredibly diverse range of habitats, offering chances to spot some incredible wildlife.

Over 130 campgrounds are situated in the park, with full electricity and water hookups available to RV campers.

These are just some of the amazing campgrounds nearby. If you’re looking to travel further afield, then get out there, as there are lots more to discover.
