The downtown Detroit area is one of the safer urban areas to be in, any time of year. It is even mostly free of some of the crime that takes place in other parts of the city such as drugs, gangs, and pick-pocketing. Just be sure to be aware and stay with your travel partner.

This rings true for any city, keep your belongings as close to your body as possible. Items such as wearing a cross-body purse, or putting your wallet in your front pocket, can help keep you from being a victim of robbery or pick-pocketing. These types of crimes usually happen to people who are carrying their handbags loosely in their hands or large wallets hanging out of their pockets.
